So I accidentally hit the CoD4x autoupdate button instead of join game button.

Now I continually get an error that pops up after getting to setting up game of

Error: Could not find zone: D:\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\zone\english\mod.ff

It worked fine until I mistakenly updated. Am I doomed to a full reinstall???

try running the game as "Administrator" if that fails you could try re-installing the mod -

I am on version 18.5 of CoD4X running Win 10 with no game issues. One of the earlier versions gave some issues with game access.
Only other thought is to do a roll back or back up and restore to an earlier version of your OS.
Other than that I can't help.

Awol and RogerRabbit , which mod should I uninstall and reinstall? It's weird it talks about mod.ff in the zone/english/ directory as I would think it would be in the mod/<whatever mod>/ directory.

hmmmm - had a look at my install and no mod.ff in that location - found one in "F:\Program Files (x86)\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\Mods\ModWarfare"

Try moving the mods folder out of the ModernWarfare folder - move not delete, see if it reinstalls the mod when you try to join the server

If you're on steam, validate the cache files. You're missing some vital file that it needs to run.

This was an error that appeard in update 18.1 and was resolved in 18.2. Try manually installing 18.3 update from here

Or you could remove the update by deleting the folder

C:\users\your name\CallofDuty4MW\bin\cod4x_018

MAD_DAD : I don't have that folder??? And I tried to manual install from that link. I get an error something about the update folder not being there.

chrisboots not a steam install.

RogerRabbit I will try that when I get time later today moving the mod folder. That's the only other thing I can think to try. I did do the uninstaller for cod4x and then joined the server and it did the "install" script but still the error.

If moving the mod folder doesn't work I'll back up my config_mp and reinstall the game. I found this disk finally. Just have to get the patches (is all I need the 1.6 and 1.7) and then hopefully all will be well. Hope to be back on soon!

The location is:

C:\users\yourname\Appdata\Local\CallofDuty4MW\bin\

Sorry quoted wrong location earlier...if appdata folder is not there then it is hidden.

To unhide click view then put a tick in show hidden items

Please try this before uninstalling cod4
