Hello COD 4 fanatics,

I have a question. Lately I have received quite some requests for new modded maps on our COD 4 DM server. To comply to this request I have yesterday tried some modded maps on the server (Rooftops and Ravine). Even though the maps turned out not to be very well suited for the server with bad spawns, in general the visitors were happy that I was trying out some new maps with them.

I therefore wondered whether it would be a good idea to try some new modded maps more regularly on the server. Of course, only if the visitors would like to do so and only if there are no people online who are against this idea. Is there a list of potential suitable new modded maps that could be tried out on our server? If you all think this is a good idea of course. Level 80 admins could then, if the circumstances are right, try out the new maps on the server. In my opinion, the best way to find out whether a map works is to just give it a try. As long as we make sure that we have an up-to-date list of maps that are suitable or not so suitable for the server.

In that way, we can comply to the requests of our guests and add some new modded maps to the rotation.

Hi Basso i've sent you a PM(i think) about this.
I have put together a list of 15 maps.
Now i only have to figure out how to change a map on the server (testing)
I know it's thru console, but don't know what to do next...

Well the easy answer is yes... but.

In October 2017, after quite a few requests, Flatty added a few hundred MOD maps to our library. All of which can be seen on the drop down at the top of the HP. His brief to myself was, try them out, but try them on a test server 1st.
And the reason for this was.To firstly make sure they loaded ok, and didn't crash the server. Some mod maps sometimes have big bugs or flaws in, and can crash servers. And if they crash our main servers, only someone with the capability of a server restart can restart it. If the test server crashes while testing a new map, there is no big issue.
Plus, some maps are just no good. They can be too small or too basic or have totally inadequate spawns. Admittedly the true impact of spawns can't always been felt on a test server. But you get a good idea. Especially on FFA.
So yes by all means try them, as there are some real good ones. But please only on the test server. And if you find a good one, let myself or Wax know and we can try it out. And if popular, add it to a rotation.

The other "but" was this. In July 2018, this past summer. Our servers player numbers reduced quite a bit. Ranking went down from 125 to around 200. Wax did a post about it and asked for answers. Heat was a reason and so was holidays. But the biggest compliant we had was, and it was a shock. Our rotations change too frequently and there are too many mod maps in some rotations. (The Thread is still in the old forum).

When Flatty added the new Mod maps in October 2017, I had a chat with a few guys, including Wax. Just to see how we should handle introducing the new maps.. So we agreed to test some on the test server first, and if they loaded and seem to play out ok, we agreed to add a couple of new Mod maps every 2 weeks or so. So this is what we did. Right up until spring 2018. Then we had a few rumblings that we were changing the rotation too often. So we agreed to extend it to 3 weeks or so. And then when we had all PM's and forum posts in the summer. We decided not to change it until it went stale. You naturally get a feeling when somethings gone stale. So we changed from having 7 stock and 4 or more mods, 2 of which were new maps. To tried and trusted maps the vast majority of which being stock maps. This had an impact, and our TDM and especially FFA server numbers rose back to normal pretty quickly...

So I guess the short answer is. By all means give some a test. Thats what they are there for. To test and add if good. But in the test server please to make sure they load properly.

Also please bare in mind, history tells us, too many mod map and maps that are changed too often, can be counter-constructive.

But happy to try some again if that "is" what's required.

I personally love a good MOD map. And finding a Gem of one is a real joy..

Hi Tube. Thank you for your elaborate answer. You raise some good arguments there m8. I see why it would not be good to do it right away, but I think that it would then be good if we can try out some new modded maps on the test server from time to time. Will you also join RedsKills?

Hi mate.

Yep absolutely. I used to test some with Wildcat and Boots back last year. The more the merrier so we can get a better feel for the map..

The aim is to keep our servers active and fun. So we have to react to different climates. If the summer season was back ti tried and tested. Maybe now we can start drip feeding some tested mods in now and then. If that's what people want.

But 1st , get say 14 maps you want to test, and we can set the test server up with them. Ten minutes each map. And then we can give them a bash.

Always up for a good mod map however some I've seen are shocking. Can you post if you decide to put some on the test server so we can all try them out and get a wide range of feedback :D

Hello lads, offcourse i'm on board.
I'll try some of the maps on our testserver, to see how they look like and wether they have potential for either TDM or FFA.
I believe not all maps are suited for both TDM and FFA.
Also i'll try to give some sort of assessment what I think/feel...

Turns out i'm lvl 40 on that particular server... hope some-one can sort that out for me...

Sounds good. Maybe we can discuss a date and time on which we can test the maps as a group. As you say Tube, a 10 minute duration for all maps should be good to test as much maps as possible in a low amount of time.

I would prefer on a friday or in the weekends. What would you guys and girls like?

And which maps would be potential kandidates for this? I have no idea of that, but I know that Red has a list, right?

Ive now added you to the test server, at the same level as you are on the FFA server. So you will be able to try some mod maps out on the test server. Once you get about 10-15 you want to try, Let me know and I will make a rotation out of them on the test server ready for Friday, So we can hopefully get a few on there to try them Friday and over the weekend...

It is a good thing to try news every so often, I got in for one and not the other. Personally I would keep doing it never know what we will find for good maps.

One of the main draws to OGHF for me was the modded maps, this game is senile like me, and I found it refreshing when there was a map or 5 in the rotation that wasn't broadcast, crash, or overgrown (all good maps btw, just the only maps you find around the net) I stopped looking once I found OGHF. Plus I like the no chopper/weak chopper... :)

In short...

+1 on the customaps in rotation.

How about we try out maps once a month. Post it on the webby and see who turns up or even a select few players? I'm happy to test out new maps.

I should be home at an half decent time tonight, so if anyone is about at about 7pm uk time, we can get on TS and talk it through. And more important, try a few on the test server.

Nice one Tube..
I figured out how to change maps myself, did some..2..
And they where quit alike but nice.

One was: stream.
Two was: uphill.

Rather similar looking, village staged, kind of, door to door(ish), combat FFA worthy, maybe even TDM
There were 3 guests and they thought they'd do...

I'll try out more in the early hours tomorrow morning...

So we did a couple of maps this night.

sps_bismarck_s : really huge, it turned out that there are two ships on there for which one team is on the one ship and the other is on the other one. Quite funny, but also really hard to use on DM. Might work for TDM but mostly for a funny clan match!

sipins interesting map, but the problem is that if you have the house, you can easily kill the enemies, especially because there is not much place to hide to get to the house. It has a big field of grass in front of it and the bushes that are there can be shot through.
selo great map! A bit small though so it must be seen whether it works when the server is crowded.
run_and_gun nice map!
redxxx interesting map as well! Especially because it has a tunnel system which adds a bit to it.

For me personally I would like to see Selo on the DM server. I think that redxxx could work for TDM, the same applies for run and gun

Yes it was good tonight guys and gal. Plus our friend from the US of A that joined us. A good test of a few good maps. I liked Selo, and the map called return that we played.

Well guys now we know they load. We can try one or two of the goods ones we tried on the FFA server... See how they play out with a few on. (Need to ask Wax re TDM....)

As discussed, we need to let other users know 1st we want to try a new map next. If some are don't want to, we have to respect that. Some guys wait for their map to come along in the rotation. But generally players are fine with it.
