During the past 7-8 months Activision have released a number of patches for COD4 via the Steam distribution. These are to solve vulnerabilities in the code, the outcome for many users was the loss of favourite server access.

I strongly recommend that if you are playing COD4 you do so with the COD4X executable, this adds lots of features that make it more secure and more fun to play the game. The file is available at the bottom of this post, to run this on a Steam install you will need to manually roll back the COD4 MP exe to the pre patch version(also attached to this thread). After doing this turn off auto updates for COD4.

Our servers run the COD4X exe and have done for a couple of years now, it is great.

To get COD4 running in Steam swap the attached iw3mp file with the one in the cod4 dir.

Mine is located as in the attached pic.

You can always do a search for iw3 in explorer and that way find the original files.

Hope this helps ROGUE49 :)

Many thanks Flatty. I was having problems with cod 4 crashing between maps and this has fixed it. Although I have lost all my classes and I am back to square 1. But thanks for the post!

If you're getting timeout errors every time you try and connect to a server your server cache may be failing to update.

On Windows find & rename the servercache.dat file in your app data folder to something else (eg. broken_servercache.dat) then restart the game a few times & refresh servers. This should jig it back to life.
If you're on Mac (like me :D ) then the same file to rename is likely located at ‎⁨Macintosh HD⁩ ▸ ⁨Users⁩ ▸ ⁨YOURUSERNAME ▸ ⁨Library⁩ ▸ ⁨Application Support⁩ ▸ ⁨Call of Duty 4⁩

Once it's renamed start the game up and refresh servers, then restart it, there should be a new servercache.dat file created in the same folder which works.

I use Cod4 on Steam and wasn't able to play for months because of this file corrupting. The fix was barely documented online and not at all for Mac, so I hope this helps someone.
